Thyroid Health

Evidence-Based Naturopathic Support for Thyroid Health

When your thyroid isn’t functioning well, it can affect almost every part of your body.

Perhaps you’re constantly exhausted despite getting enough sleep. Maybe you’re struggling with weight changes, brain fog, anxiety or feeling either too hot or too cold. Your digestion has changed, your hair is thinning, or you simply don’t feel like yourself anymore.

If you’ve been told your thyroid blood tests are “normal” but you’re still experiencing symptoms, it can be incredibly frustrating.

You’re not imagining it.

Your symptoms deserve to be investigated, understood and taken seriously.

At Naturally with Leah, I provide personalised, evidence-informed naturopathic care to support people living with thyroid conditions. Together, we’ll explore your health history, nutrition, lifestyle, existing pathology and medical diagnosis to develop a realistic plan that complements your healthcare team.

Whether you’ve recently been diagnosed, have been managing a thyroid condition for years, or are searching for answers to ongoing symptoms, my goal is to help you better understand your health and support your wellbeing.

  • Feeling cold
  • Constipation
  • Slow metabolism

Mood & Brain Function

  • Reduced motivation

Hormones & Skin

  • Heavy or irregular periods
  • Fertility concerns
  • Low libido

Other Common Symptoms

  • Palpitations
  • Tremor
  • Heat intolerance
  • Excessive sweating
  • Neck discomfort
  • Family history of thyroid disease

If several of these symptoms sound familiar, it may be worth investigating whether your thyroid health is contributing.

Understanding Thyroid Conditions

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of your neck, but it has an enormous influence on your health.

It helps regulate:

  • Metabolism
  • Energy production
  • Body temperature
  • Heart rate
  • Digestion
  • Hormone balance
  • Brain function
  • Muscle strength
  • Cholesterol metabolism

When thyroid hormone levels become too high, too low or fluctuate significantly, symptoms can affect almost every body system.

Some of the thyroid conditions I commonly support include:

  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Graves’ disease
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Thyroid nodules
  • Thyroid hormone imbalance

Many thyroid disorders are autoimmune conditions, meaning the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland. This is one reason thyroid health often overlaps with gut health, inflammation and other autoimmune diseases.

My Approach to Thyroid Health

There is no single thyroid diet, supplement or treatment that works for everyone.

Every person’s symptoms, medical history, medications and pathology results are unique.

During your consultation we’ll take the time to understand the bigger picture before developing an individualised treatment plan.

Your plan may include:

Personalised Nutrition

Evidence-informed dietary advice to support thyroid health while ensuring adequate nutrition and avoiding unnecessary dietary restrictions.

Gut Health Support

The gut plays an important role in nutrient absorption and immune regulation. If digestive symptoms are present, improving gut health may form part of your treatment plan.

Lifestyle Medicine

Sleep, stress, movement and recovery all influence how we feel. Practical lifestyle strategies form an important part of long-term thyroid support.

Practitioner-Only Supplements

Where clinically appropriate, practitioner-only supplements may be recommended to address nutritional deficiencies and support overall health.

Collaborative Care

I work alongside your GP and endocrinologist. My recommendations are designed to complement your prescribed medical treatment—not replace it.

Functional Testing

If appropriate, we may review or recommend investigations including:

  • Existing pathology review
  • TSH
  • Free T4
  • Free T3
  • Thyroid antibodies (TPO & TgAb)
  • Iron studies
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin B12
  • Folate
  • Zinc
  • Selenium (where appropriate)
  • Gut microbiome testing where digestive symptoms are present

If you’ve recently had blood tests through your GP or specialist, please bring them with you so we can review them together.

Nutrition & Lifestyle Support

The internet is full of conflicting advice about thyroid health.

Some people are told to remove gluten, avoid vegetables, eliminate dairy or take numerous supplements.

While some dietary strategies may be appropriate for certain people, there is no one-size-fits-all thyroid diet.

My approach focuses on sustainable habits that support your overall health rather than restrictive food rules.

This may include:

  • Optimising protein intake
  • Supporting healthy blood sugar regulation
  • Including selenium-rich foods where appropriate
  • Correcting iron deficiency if present
  • Supporting vitamin D levels
  • Encouraging regular movement
  • Improving sleep quality
  • Managing stress
  • Supporting digestive health

The goal is to develop realistic changes that are sustainable for the long term.

My Thyroid Story

Thyroid health is much more than a professional interest for me—it’s something I’ve experienced personally.

Several years ago, I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease, an autoimmune condition that causes the thyroid gland to become overactive.

Like many people living with thyroid disease, I experienced first-hand how much a thyroid condition can affect every aspect of life. My energy changed, my body felt unfamiliar, and I found myself trying to make sense of conflicting information while navigating medical appointments and treatment.

That journey sparked a deep interest in understanding not only thyroid disease, but also autoimmune health, nutrition and lifestyle medicine. It ultimately inspired me to study naturopathy and nutrition so I could better understand the factors that influence health and support others facing similar challenges.

Today, I combine my personal experience with university qualifications and evidence-informed practice to provide compassionate, practical care.

While everyone’s health journey is different, I understand how overwhelming a thyroid diagnosis can feel. My role is to listen, help you understand your health, and work alongside your medical team to develop realistic strategies that support your wellbeing.

I don’t promise miracle cures or quick fixes.

Instead, I focus on helping you feel informed, supported and confident in managing your health over the long term.

Can a Naturopath treat thyroid disease?

Naturopathic care is designed to complement your medical treatment—not replace it. I work alongside your GP or endocrinologist to support your overall health through nutrition, lifestyle strategies and evidence-informed complementary care.

No. Never stop or change prescribed thyroid medication unless advised by your treating doctor.

Not necessarily. If you have recent blood test results or specialist reports, bring them with you. If further testing may be beneficial, we’ll discuss this during your consultation.

This varies depending on your health goals, symptoms and condition. Many people begin with an initial consultation followed by review appointments every 4–8 weeks while implementing their treatment plan.

Diet plays an important role in overall health and may help address nutrient deficiencies that can influence thyroid function. Recommendations are always individualised rather than based on restrictive trends.
