Thyroid Fatigue
I’m Leah, a naturopath and nutritionist, and I want to dive into a topic that’s close to my heart and my thyroid: the relentless fatigue that often accompanies thyroid disease.
You see, I’m not just a health professional preaching from a textbook. I’m right there in the trenches with you, battling Graves’ disease, an autoimmune condition that wreaks havoc on the thyroid gland. And let me tell you, one of the most challenging aspects of this condition is the bone-deep exhaustion that it brings.
My Experience with Thyroid Fatigue
For years the doctors couldn’t work out what was wrong with me. Examinations for heart disease, thyroid (didn’t check antibodies), Lupus (family history) and early menopause. NOTHING
All along I was just getting more and more exhausted. Which for anyone who knows me is not me. I have some underlying ADHD and usually can’t sit still. So staying in bed for months and having the worst brain fog.
Finally, a Doctor did antibody tests and worked out I had Graves Disease. A fantastic Endocrinologist who was pro-natural health, diet and herbs. We worked out a plan with medication and herbs and within 6 months I was in remission.
This experience has helped me to research and be able to support my patients with both Graves disease and Hashimotos.
Thyroid Fatigue explained
Thyroid fatigue is not your typical tiredness. It’s not the kind of fatigue that can be fixed with a good night’s sleep or a strong cup of coffee (although those things certainly help!). It’s a pervasive, soul-sapping weariness that can make even the simplest tasks feel like climbing Mount Everest.
So, what causes this debilitating fatigue? Well, it all boils down to the thyroid gland, that tiny but mighty butterfly-shaped organ in your neck. When your thyroid isn’t functioning properly—whether it’s overactive like mine with Graves’ disease, underactive with hypothyroidism, or affected by other thyroid disorders—it can throw your whole body out of whack.
You see, the thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating your metabolism, energy production, and overall well-being. When it’s out of balance, it can disrupt your body’s natural rhythms and leave you feeling drained and depleted.
Is this tired my new normal?
No. It doesn’t have to be.
But here’s the thing: you don’t have to resign yourself to a life of constant fatigue just because you have thyroid disease. As a naturopath and someone who’s been through the trenches myself, I’ve learned a thing or two about managing thyroid fatigue and reclaiming your energy and vitality.
How I can help you
First and foremost, it’s essential to work closely with a knowledgeable healthcare team to ensure that your thyroid condition is properly managed. This may involve medication, dietary changes, supplements, and other interventions tailored to your individual needs.
From a naturopathic perspective, many holistic strategies can help support thyroid health and alleviate fatigue. This might include optimising your diet to include thyroid-supportive foods, as well as reducing inflammation and supporting your adrenal glands with stress management techniques.
Additionally, prioritising quality sleep, staying hydrated, and engaging in regular exercise can all play a significant role in boosting your energy levels and overall well-being. And don’t forget the power of self-care! Taking time for yourself, whether it’s indulging in a relaxing bath, spending time in nature, or pursuing a hobby you love, can do wonders for your physical, mental, and emotional health.
So, if you’re struggling with thyroid fatigue, know that you’re not alone, and there is hope for relief. By taking a comprehensive approach to managing your thyroid health, addressing the root causes of fatigue, and prioritising self-care, you can reclaim your energy and vitality and navigate the waters of thyroid disease with strength and resilience.
